Toward the Dutch Energy Transition – Solar & Storage Innovations from the Netherlands

With the highest per capita deployment of solar PV worldwide (about 1,544 Watt/capita), the Netherlands are continuing to establish themselves as one of Europe’s biggest solar PV markets. According to EUPD Research’s GET Matrix, the country reached a cumulative installed PV capacity of 27.7 GW in 2024 – rising from 11.1 GW in 2020. In 2024 the newly installed PV capacity declined compared to 2023; EUPD Research attributes this to increased uncertainty among residential solar investors due to the government’s abolishment of the net metering scheme by January 2027. EUPD Research estimates that the cumulative solar PV capacity in the Netherlands will surpass 50 GW towards the end of 2030.
