Within the European Union, Italy ranks third in terms of cumulative solar PV installed capacity, behind Germany and Spain. Italy’s comulated PV capacity reached 25.1 GW at the end of 2022. EUPD Research estimates that the country is likely to install around 4 GW in 2023.

The Italian Government has set ambitious targets for the solar PV sector:

• Narrowing the energy price gap
• Phasing out the use of coal in electricity generation by 2025
• Reducing final energy consumption by a total of 10 Mtoe by 2030
• Furthering sustainable public transportation and eco-friendly fuels
• Reaching a 28% share of renewables in total energy consumption, and a 55% share of renewables in electricity consumption by 2030

It is expected to make solar PV the most important renewable energy source in Italy, overtaking hydropower.
